Misc. Notes
1. “Elisha Sanders was born Jan. 16, 1804, in Greene county, Ky. He was married Jan. 17, 1824, in the same county, to Jane Faucett. They had three children here, and moved to Sangamon county, Ill., arriving Dec. 16, 1829, and stopped two miles west of Springfield, where Timothy Meader now lives. In 1836 he sold out there, and bought land on Horse Creek, four miles east of the latter place. They had ten children in Sangamon County. Elisha Sanders was for many years a licensed preacher, previous to May 1863 when he was ordained at Horse Creek regular Predestinarian Baptist church, and is now pastor of that church.”
[139]2. This sketch was completed in June 1874:“Rev. Elisha Sanders says, that although he came into the county ten years after settlement commenced, yet he found houses very scarce. His brother-in-law, Wm. Crowder, and himself, in December, 1839, cut down oak trees, split them in halves, built a cabin west of Springfield, covered it with clapboards, chinked it with wood, and in stead of lime, made mortar of the rich black soil, and plastered the cracks. The plastering was done in freezing weather, but they kept up a fire on the inside until it was dry. The chimney was made of sticks and plastered in the same way, and when it was dry, the prints of their fingers could be seen all over the plastering. Mr. Sanders now lives in a house much better than the average farm houses in the county, but he says he never felt so rich as when he moved into the cabin plastered with mud. Mr. Sanders remembers that the "deep snow" of 1830-31 was about three and one-half feet deep on a level. He had to gather his corn twice. The first time he took all the ears on a level with and above the snow, and after it went off he went over again and gathered nearly as much more. He saved a cow and calf from perishing by taking them in with his family and keeping them in one corner of the house.”

4. From the Illinois Public Domain Land Tract Sales Database:
Land sales from the public domain were recorded by field employees of the U.S. General Land Office, state and local officials, and clerks of the Illinois Central Railroad. These records were transferred to the Illinois State Archives for permanent retention in 1957. Because the records are arranged by legal description, a database was developed to allow the records to be searched by name. The database contains information about nearly 550,000 land sales from the 54,740 square miles of the public domain sold within Illinois.
Each purchase entry includes the
purchaser's name, purchase date, number of acres, price per acre, numeric code indicating the county in which the land is located, legal description (township, section, range), volume and page numbers of original entry, and variously, the sale type, and the purchaser's sex and residence.
