1. William Thomas was the only “white” Cherokee indian chief. He was known as “Lil Wil” by the Eastern Band of the Cherokees, and was the chief of the Eastern Band during the Civil War years. He alone, was responsible for the Eastern Band being able to stay in Western North Carolina. [5]

2. Listed as insane in the 1870 US Census, head of household and State Senator from N.C., His mother, Temperance is living with the family at age 95. They are shown living in Subdivision 66 of the Qualla Township, Jackson County, N.C.
