1. From a taped interview with Beatrice Wakenshaw Nov 2001: “Harry was a minister. He and his family lived in Chatham. They didn’t pay ministers much in those days, so he worked at the mine too (the Panther Creek Mine in Auburn, Illinois). He would go to the mine at night time to work. He was called a ‘shot-firer’, and would go along and light the fuses that fired the shot that the miners had loaded during the day. The fuses had carbide in them, and someone had taped the fuses wrong and it blew out on him and killed him.”
