J. M. Elliott of Vernon, who recently celebrated his eighty-second birthday, soon will observe the fify-eighth anniversary of his admittance to the Texas bar. He was born at Kemp, Kaufman Co., Texas and lived in that section until young manhood. He studied law in the office of J. S. Wood and J. D. Cummingham, and received his license to practice law on July 5, 1887. Two years later the Elliott family moved to Shackleford County. Here he engaged in law practice for several years and on July 6, 1893, married Miss Carrie Ivey at the home of the bride's brother, H. Ivey. In 1897, Mr. and Mrs. Elliott moved to Mansfield, Tarrant County, Texas where they lived until 1905. During his residence in Mansfield, Elliott served as assistant county attorney to the late James W. Swayne and the late O. S. Lattimore. In 1905, the Elliotts moved to Memphis, Texas and he soon was appointed county attorney for Hall County, serving in that capacity for four years. He has been active in civic and business affairs, as well as carrying on an extensive legal practice. He assisted in the organization of the Memphis Ice & Electric Company and served as president until the company was sold to the city of Memphis in 1913 and also was instrumental in the organization of the Cotton Oil Company and the Citizens State Bank. The Elliotts now are residents of Vernon, where a daughter, Mrs J. E. Teer also lives. Other children are Mrs. J. C. Ezell, Snyder; Leroy A. Elliott, Fort Worth, John M. Elliott, Lubbock and Rainey Elliott, Tulsa.” [269]
