On the last page of a book entitled A Memorial History and Genealogical Record of the John Howell and Jacob Stutzman Families is the following, written in hand by Alva Fink: “‘ But though the large, black eyes opened when she raised her head, there was no recognition in their gaze; for the soul was preparing for it’s final flight, and was too busy to look out of it’s own windows.’ [from ‘St. Elmo’] Alva Fink” (it is thought that she wrote this after her son, Howell’s death in 1922).
